Saturday, December 23, 2017

The 2017 count will be held on SATURDAY, December 23, 2017. If you plan to join us on the count, please call me or the appropriate regional leader listed below. If any of the area leaders cannot continue as leader give me a call. There is no fee for participation.

The compilation dinner will be at the Lenoir Nature Center, 19 Dudley Street in Yonkers. The cost for the dinner is only $10 and we'll have a great selection of hot food and fabulous homemade desserts by the great bakers from the Hudson River Audubon Society. The center will be open by 4:30 PM for those who need a place to meet and total up your birds or just warm up. The food and count down will begin at 6:00 PM or when the groups have their numbers ready.

Directions to Lenoir: From Saw Mill River Pkwy: Exit at Exit 9,
Executive Blvd. Take Executive Blvd. to North Broadway and turn right.
Go 1/4 mile and turn left onto Dudley Street. Lenoir's parking lot is on

How the count works

A Christmas Bird Count is a census near Christmas of the number of each species of bird seen in a 24-hour period in a particular area or count circle.

The Bronx-Westchester count will be held on Saturday December 23, 2017. It has an 93-year history and was started by the famed Bronx County Bird Club in 1924. The count has included participants such as Roger Tory Peterson and Allan D. Cruickshank.

The Bronx-Westchester count is organized by dividing the count circle (radius 7.5 miles) up into 6 regional areas; East Bronx, West Bronx, Yonkers, Hudson Valley (Hastings area), Rye (Rye and Harrison), and Scarsdale (which covers Scarsdale through Mt. Vernon over to New Rochelle and north to Mamaroneck). Each area leader then assigns parts of the area to different teams or "parties". Each party canvas the area assigned and counts and tabulates all they have seen. The results are compiled later that evening at the Count Dinner. Attendance to the dinner is optional.

The results are placed on the web along with data from years past.

People with feeders can include their birds by calling in their results in the afternoon. Count your birds at your own feeder
