Hudson River Audubon Society Field Trip

               

 

 

 

 

The Delmarva Peninsula Field Trip

Friday to Monday, May 4 – May 6, 2018

 

     We’ll visit Delmarva – the DELaware, MARyland and VirginiA peninsula to search for American Avocets, Black-necked Stilts, Northern Bobwhite, Whimbrel, Chuck-wills-widow, Red-headed Woodpecker, Brown-headed Nuthatch, Purple Martin, Prothonotary, Yellow-throated and Kentucky Warblers, Summer Tanager, and Blue Grosbeak.

 

     Note: we will be staying in a different hotel most nights and will be heading onto the field early at 7 AM each morning without returning to the hotel. You are responsible for your own transportation and hotel reservations. You may join us on all or part of the trip. Take George Washington Bridge and follow signs for the New Jersey Turnpike
Take the New Jersey Turnpike south to the Delaware Memorial Bridge
After crossing bridge go 9.3 miles following signs for 95 south, to Exit 4A DE-1South
Take DE 1 South 11.9 miles to Exit 136 for DE-299 toward US-13/Odessa Middletown
Turn right onto DE-299 W/Middletown Odessa Rd
Follow DE-299 W 2.7 mi and use the left 2 lanes to turn left onto US-301 S/Middletown Warwick Rd
Follow US-301 S for 37.1 miles
Take the MD-213 exit toward Wye Mills/Centreville
Turn left onto MD-213 S/Centreville Rd and go 4.4 mi
Turn left onto US-50 E/Ocean Gateway
Go 29 miles to Holiday Inn Express on the right (about 1.3 miles after crossing the Choptank River Bridge

Turn right out of hotel onto US-50 East and go 0.4 mi
Use the right 2 lanes to turn right onto MD-16 W/Church Creek Rd
Take Church Creek Rd 7.3 miles and turn left onto MD-335 S/Golden Hill Rd
Go 7.8 mi on MD-335 S/Golden Hill Rd and turn right onto Hip Roof Rd
Go 0.6 mi and turn right onto a dirt road (maybe paved now) to parking lot.

Visitor Center and Wildlife Drive

10 minutes
Turn left onto Hip Roof Rd and go 0.6 mi
Turn left onto MD-335 N and go 3.9 mi
Turn right onto Key Wallace Dr go 1.0 mile and turn right into Visitor Center.

To Cambridge Diner (Lunch)
Turn right onto Key Wallace Drive and go 1.2 mi
Turn left onto Egypt Rd and go 7.1 mi
Turn right onto MD-16 E/Church Creek Rd and go 2.8 mi
Turn right onto US-50 E
Make the next left, 0.4 mi and follow the road to the dinner

 

Directions to Best Western Chincoteague Island

From diner head west on US-50 W and make a U-turn
Take Route 50 East 33.2 mi and continue straight onto US-13 South
 Take US-13 South 38.9 mi and turn left onto VA-175 E/Chincoteague Rd
 Follow Chincoteague Rd 10.9 mi to the Island (stop on causeway pull off to bird)
Continue straight onto Maddox Blvd and go 1.1 mi
At the traffic circle, take the 3rd exit and stay on Maddox Blvd
Destination will be on the left

Directions to Milburn Landing State Park

Pocomoke City, MD 
45 minutes
Turn right onto Maddox Blvd
At the traffic circle, take the 2nd exit and stay on Maddox Blvd and go 1.2 mi
Continue straight onto Chincoteague Rd. After 10.9 mi turn right onto US-13 N
Follow US-13 North 10.6 mi and turn right onto MD-364 E/Dividing Creek Rd
Go 6.4 miles to entrance. Follow road to end at parking lot (we may stop along the road to bird)

 

Directions to Bombay Hook NWR, DE
2591 Whitehall Neck Rd, Smyrna, DE

2 hours
Take Milburn Landing State park entrance road back to MD-354 N /Nassawango Rd and turn right
Take MD-354 N 21.3 miles and turn right onto US-50 East
Take US-50 East 2.2 mi and turn left onto MD-610 E/Whaleysville Rd  6.3 miles
Take MD-610 E/Whaleysville Rd  6.3 miles and turn left onto US-113 N
Follow US-113 N 37.9 miles and use the right 2 lanes to take the ramp onto DE-1 N
Take DE-1 North 12 miles to the DE-9 exit.
Take DE-9 North (watch for speed traps) 14.7 miles and make a right onto Whitehall Neck Rd to the refuge

Optional spots: Port Mahon Road -along Rt 9, 8.2 mi south of Bombay Hook) for Seaside Sparrow.

Little Creek Wildlife Refuge (along Rt 9 1.6 mi south of the Port Mahon Rd turnoff) for American Avocet

Directions to Home

From Bombay head out on Whitehall Neck Rd for 2.1 mi
Turn right onto DE-9 N and immediately make the slight left onto Rd 12/Smyrna Leipsic Rd
Take Road 12 4.7 miles and turn right onto US-13 N
Take US-13 North 3.5 miles and turn left to merge onto DE-1 N
Take DE-1 North 25 miles to I-95 North
Once on I-95 North FOLLOW SIGNS FOR DELAWARE MEMORIAL BRIDGE
Once over bridge continues straight onto the New Jersey Turnpike to G.W. Bridge
